Roundup

California jury awarded $289 million to a former groundskeeper who claims the weed killer Roundup gave him terminal cancer.

Groundskeeper, Dewayne Johnson, used Roundup about 20-30 times per year while working at a school outside San Francisco between 2012-2016. He was diagnosed with non- Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2014. Johnson then contacted Monsanto, who makes Roundup, to ask if there may be a correlation between the herbicide and his cancer. He was told no so he continued using the product. His cancer spread and he had lesions covering 80% of his body at the time of trial. In 2015, the World Health Organization said that glyphosate – the herbicide in Roundup – was likely carcinogenic and could cause cancer in humans. It is one of the most commonly used herbicides in the United States. Bayer, the company that owns Monsanto, continues to deny that glyphosate causes cancer. Bayer plans on changing the Monsanto brand name, which has been compromised by years of awareness campaigns by environmental groups but does not seem to have plans to stop selling Roundup. Timothy Litzenburg, one of Mr. Johnson’s attorneys, estimates that there are 5,000 potential claims against Monsanto across the country.
