Paraquat
What is paraquat?
Paraquat is one of the most highly used herbicides, for weed and grass control and has been used on crops/in yards since the 1960’s. Herbicides containing paraquat, are but not limited to: Gramozone, Cyclone, Clyclonestar, Firestorm, Helmquat, Parazone, Quick-Quat, Purgatory 3 SL, Willowood Paraquat 3SL, Blano, Bonedry and Devour.
How you could have been exposed to paraquat
If you are a licensed applicator of paraquat, a farmer, or paraquat has been sprayed on your lawn, you may have been exposed to the toxic chemical. Paraquat poisoning is possible through eating or drinking paraquat contaminated food or beverages, through skin exposure (cuts, sores or rashes) or can be inhaled, causing lung damage.
How paraquat works
The extent of paraquat poisoning depends on the amount and duration of exposure along with the individual’s health conditions at the time of exposure. It causes direct damage when it comes in contact with the lining of the mouth, stomach or intestines. Once paraquat enters the body, it is distributed throughout the entire body and causes toxic chemical reactions to occur within the lungs, liver and kidneys.
Signs, symptoms, and long-term exposure of paraquat
Upon immediate ingestion of large amounts of paraquat, the individual will have pain and swelling of the mouth and throat.
Paraquat and Parkinson’s Diseas
Mounting evidence suggests a link between paraquat and Parkinson’s Disease. Manufacturers of the product were allegedly aware of certain health risks associated with the herbicide and failed to inform individuals on how to protect themselves.
