The risk of developing BIA-ALCL is low but can be very serious. Initially there may be noticeable swelling in lymph nodes, followed by fever, night sweats and fatigue. BIA-ALCL can occur when there is inflammation during the formation of scar tissue or bacterial contamination at the surgical site. In order to get an accurate diagnosis, an analysis of the enlarged lymph node is required to determine if there are lymphoma cells present. If caught early enough, BIA-ALCL can typically be treated by removing the implant along with surrounding scar tissue. If you have undergone breast implant surgery and are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above, it is important to set up an appointment with your primary care physician right away.
